Rosmarie T. Bovino, Ed.D.
Rosmarie Bovino began her career in the Uniondale Public Schools where she was a special education teacher. She later became a computer teacher in the Lynbrook School District before traveling to Hong Kong in 1985 where she became principal of the Chinese International School (C.I.S.). Dr. Bovino joined C.I.S. after its inaugural year with a founding enrollment of 76 students. She helped develop its bilingual program in English and Chinese (Mandarin) and was instrumental in the school’s growth and development, which led to the construction of six new buildings that now accommodate nearly 1400 students. C.I.S. is considered by many to be the premier school in Southeast Asia.
In 1991, Dr. Bovino returned to the United States. She joined Friends Academy on Long Island. In her capacity as Director of Studies (Pre-K through Grade 12), she was responsible for guiding administrators, teachers, and parents through the Middle States Accreditation for Growth process. Throughout her ten-year tenure, she spearheaded several initiatives including the Student-Centered Learning/ACES Program and Peace and Social Action Plan. She expanded course offerings in science, technology, the visual and performing arts, and the Advanced Placement program. She initiated a world language program at the elementary school as well as integrated the use of the Reggio Emilia Approach in early childhood grades. She was actively involved in fundraising for new programs and building projects that were at the heart of a $25 million capital campaign.
For the past twelve years, Dr. Bovino has served the Island Park Schools as Assistant Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and Superintendent. She developed a Comprehensive School Improvement Plan that integrated technology into both instruction and assessment to improve student achievement. It also focused on teachers and administrators using data from progress monitoring tests administered to students to differentiate instruction, modify curriculum, inform general instruction, and design professional development. As a result, the district earned the New York State Education Department distinction of “Most Improved” and subsequently “High Achieving and Gap Closing Schools.” Dr. Bovino received the SCOPE Instructional Leadership Award in recognition of these accomplishments. Dr. Bovino has been instrumental in improving the district’s technology infrastructure, equipment, programs, and federal ERATE funding. Through her efforts, Island Park has implemented model technology programs in both instructional and administrative areas. All classrooms have SMARTBoards where positive effects of this technology include increased student engagement, motivation, and understanding. She works with an Audit Committee that includes Board Members, the Director of Business, and community members to ensure transparency in the budgetary and auditing processes. She holds several public meetings annually with respect to the school budget and conducts sessions in which line-by-line expenditure reporting, fund balance, and special reserve accounts are reviewed.
Dr. Bovino has been a member of several accreditation teams for both the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools. She has been a consultant to the Chinese American International School in San Francisco and the Ministry of Education in Cairo, Egypt through USAID. She has been a speaker and presenter at the NYS Data Group (DATAG), the association of Nassau District Curriculum Officers (NADCO), the NYS Math Regional Conference, and the Long Island Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (LIASCD).
Dr. Bovino holds three Masters Degrees (Master of Science in Special Education, Master of Arts in Computing, and a Master of Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Administration). Her Doctorate is from Teachers College, Columbia University. Currently, Rosmarie Bovino is also an adjunct Assistant Professor at Queens College where she teaches courses in the School Building Leader and School District Leader Programs.
